In many ways the Lumix GX9 takes two steps forward over the GX8, but one step maybe half a step back. Aimed at the enthusiast photographer who wants a compact but high-performance camera, the GX9 is Panasonic's latest premium rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, and sits above the cheaper but very similar-looking Lumix GX85 GX80 outside the US in the Lumix range. The G9 is a bigger camera, styled like a DSLR and better suited to sports, action, bigger lenses and more ambitious styles of photography.

The Lumix GX9 uses the same Here, the camera uses its 4K video processing power to capture images designed to be exported as 8MP stills. The 4K Post Focus mode is even more impressive. In this mode the camera captures a short burst using every focus point, and in playback mode you can simply tap on the picture to choose the focus point you want.

The viewfinder also has a aspect ratio — great if you're planning to shoot a lot of video, but for stills with a aspect ratio, quite a lot of real estate is lost either side of the frame. Like both the GX7 and GX8, the Lumix GX9 features a tilting electronic viewfinder, but there are some differences compared to its predecessor. While resolution remains the same at 2. The viewfinder also has a aspect ratio — great if you're planning to shoot a lot of video, but for stills with a aspect ratio, quite a lot of real estate is lost either side of the frame which obviously means a lower magnification.

There have been a number of changes to the rear display as well. The screen size stays the same at three inches with touchscreen controlbut again OLED technology makes way for a TFT display, although here there's been a slight boost in resolution, to 1, dots. The way the screen can be pulled away from the body has also been revised from the GX8, with that camera's vari-angle mechanism that's hinged on the side of the camera replaced by a tilt-angle design, which doesn't offer quite the same range of movement.

The Lumix GX9 gets Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, with the former enabling a constant connection to your smartphone with minimum power consumption. Current page: Introduction and key features.

The GX9 continues this tradition, with a beefier spec sheet than the previous GX8, but all inside a body that, with the right lens, you can still squeeze inside a roomy coat pocket.

As usual, you can take advantage of the growing number of Micro Four Thirds lenses that are available from Panasonic, Olympus and others. Read more: Panasonic GX9 review. For this latest iteration, Panasonic has maintained the On top of that, the image stabilization system has also now been upgraded from a four-axis system to a five-axis alternative, and makes use of both sensor- and lens-based stabilization for the best correction.

The touchscreen LCD screen also now gets a slight boost in resolution over the previous model's display, and this also now tilts up and down rather than around a GX8-style side hinge.

Also tilting is the new 2. As is now fairly standard on interchangeable-lens Panasonic models, videos can be captured in both 4K and Full HD flavors, while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth let you send all your masterpieces out to the wider world without the hassle of cables. You also get Panasonic's Depth from Defocus DFD autofocus system, which, as we found in our review of the modelis indeed a speedy performer, even if its tracking capabilities aren't quite flawless.

Thankfully, we also found image quality to be very good too, with decent dynamic range and fine handling over noise, although if you tend to venture past ISO with any frequency you may find noise and noise reduction to be an issue. Panasonic Lumix GX9, Lumix ZS200 Launched: Price, Specifications

The configuration above with the Lumix G mm zoom weighs g. One of the two control dials surrounds the shutter release and is operated by your index finger, while the second dial falls under your thumb on the rear and is clickable.

Also notice the movie record button with a collar switch for the main power. The GX9 is equipped with an electronic viewfinder which like the GX8 can angle-up by as much as 90 degrees.

This is a pretty unique capability and allows you to more comfortably frame at low angles, although you also have the option of angling the screen if you prefer. The wide shape means the viewfinder image may be filled when filming HD or 4k video, but letter-boxed quite severely when shooting still photos in the native shape where thick black bars are employed on the left and right sides.

In some consolation though, the touchscreen interface is excellent, allowing you to not only tap to refocus, but also tap your way through the menus, drag guides, and swipe and pinch your way through playback. In this instance, disable the touchpad feature — this will turn-off the touch screen when composing through the viewfinder, but return all touch functionality when you compose with the screen. In terms of battery life I managed around shots plus a few minutes of video per charge; for video alone, I managed just under three half hour clips of 4k video with stabilisation enabled.

The HDMI output matches the movie frequency, including 4k UHD at 24, 25 or 30p, and a setting can configure it for a clean image without icons. As I mentioned earlier though, the modest grip means the GX9 feels most comfortable with the smaller lenses in the series. You can see the mm coverage above, taking you from wide to mid-telephoto. Above are examples at close range at 12mm left and 60mm rightboth at their maximum focal ratios of f3. That said, I personally prefer the greater reach and quality of the Lumix G mm zoom.

To put it to the test for stills, I shot a book case with two lenses: the Olympus 75mm f1. With the Olympus 75mm mounted on the Lumix GX9, I shot a series of images with shutter speeds descending one stop at a time, first without stabilisation, then with it enabled. So in this test, the sensor-based stabilisation gave me a solid three stops of compensation, making unstabilised lenses much more usable. Remember not just to avoid camera shake in your photos, but also during composition and video.

With the Lumix G mm mounted on the GX9 and set to 60mm, I again shot a series of images with shutter speeds descending one stop at a time. Like all Panasonic Lumix G bodies to date, the GX9 exclusively employs a contrast-based system for autofocus.

The benefits are accuracy and operation in very low light levels, but the downside is less confident continuous focusing than a phase-detect or hybrid system. The face detection with eye detection also worked well. In terms of continuous autofocus, Panasonic employs their Depth by Defocus, or DFD, technology that profiles their Lumix and Leica lenses to better understand how to refocus them based on how the blurred areas look.

The system has matured over several generations now, and the GX9, like other recent Lumix G bodies, actually does a vey good job at tracking and refocusing on subjects moving towards or away from you even with long lenses. The GX9 can shoot bursts at 2, 6 or 9fps, all available with continuous autofocus if desired, although live feedback is only offered at the lower two speeds.

Set to RAW, I captured 33 images in 3. In my real-life tests, I photographed my friend Ben cycling towards me using single or zoned areas and continuous autofocus. With the drive set to High speed bursts, the GX9 successfully kept him in sharp focus even when using the Leica mm at mm f4 — as seen above — although at this speed there was no live feedback, making it hard to track unpredictable action.

Set the mode dial to Creative Control and the Lumix GX9 offers 22 effect filters, a selection of which are shown above; some can also be applied to video. A panorama mode is available and the GX9 does a fair job at in-camera stitching, although in the second example above it has made a mistake on the building.

Hot on the heels of the recent L Monochrome style, this is an even higher contrast option as seen above. The 4k field-of-view works out at around a 1. You can film a second shy of half an hour in any mode and in my tests I managed just under three half hour clips of 4k with stabilisation on a single charge; the camera was warm after filming for almost an hour and a half, but not hot.

Unlike the GX8, movies can exploit the sensor shift stabilisation with the option of additional digital stabilisation if desired, albeit with an extra crop to accommodate it, regardless of quality mode.Trusted Reviews may earn an affiliate commission when you purchase through links on our site. For holding focus on moving subjects the camera is now capable of tracking the entire image area in 3D, which Panasonic says should prevent objects that pass in front of your main subject from interfering with the focusing. As a result, users can expect to hand-hold at shutter speeds four stops slower than would otherwise be possible, without seeing image blur from camera shake.

One welcome update sees the GX9 adopting the same improved JPEG colour processing as the high-end G9, which aims to give more attractive sky colours and skin tones in particular.

With updated processing and noise reduction, the firm says the camera can record more detail both at low and high ISOs compared to older models. You can now add a grain effect to your shots, with a choice of different strengths.

In addition, a cryptically-named L. Monochrome D variant adjusts the tonality to bring out more detail in darker regions of the frame. As usual for Panasonic, the camera is capable of 4K video recording, although it lacks the microphone and headphone ports found on the GX8. This brings a number of benefits; for example, you can easily use your phone as a simple remote shutter release, as in the central screenshot below.

In essence, the GX9 is an evolution of the GX80, being a compact, flat-bodied design with a tilting screen and corner-mounted viewfinder. But it adds an exposure-compensation dial nested below the exposure-mode dial, and a focus-mode selector switch on the back. I used this to give quick access to ISO and white balance by pressing the Fn1 button, which is handily placed beside your thumb. It seems blindingly obvious to me that this should be used to toggle between alternate dial functions, which would make the GX9 really quick to use.

Instead you have to press the left and down keys in turn and then use the D-pad, which is rather slow and clunky. Yet again, the firm has missed an opportunity to revise how its cameras work to make them better for viewfinder shooting.

Just like the GX80, the GX9 uses a 2. Rather than using separate red, green and blue pixels in the panel, this displays red, green and blue images in very quick succession, to give a convincing illusion of a full-colour display. The aspect ratio is great when recording video, giving a wide view with a very decent 0.

Compared to the GX8 this is a major step backwards. The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR. The lower the camera weight, the easier it will be to carry around and it will also reduce your hand luggage weight when flying.

The display diagonal is the size the size of the screen integrated in to the back of the camera. A larger display diagonal makes it easier to see if a shot has turned out as intended. Pocket cameras have smaller display diagonals as full size digital SLRs. A larger display diagonal makes it easier to take photos and to see if a shot has turned out as intended.

The resolution of the images a digital camera produces is measured in megapixels MP. One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels and is a result of the pixel width multiplied by the pixel height of the image. While a higher image resolution generally results in sharper images, only a relatively low megapixel count is required when printing the image at a small size or to display it on a computer screen.

A sensor with more megapixels will be able to capture more detailed photos and the image will appear sharper. Images with more megapixels can also be printed at a larger size. Cameras with full HD video recording can capture video with a resolution of at least x pixels. A larger video resolution means the camera can shoot videos that will be sharper, more detailed and have more clarity. The video resolution is the size of the image that the camera can record in video mode.

It is measured in pixels where the first value is the number of horizontal pixels and the second value is the number of vertical pixels. A higher video resolution will be noticeable when playing back videos on HD televisions.

The video will appear sharper and more life like. Recording video at a higher resolution will fill your memory card more quickly though. GPS allows the camera to know where it is in the world and to automatically tag each of your photos with the location it was taken at. If your photos have been tagged with a GPS location you can see where they were taken, automatically let your favourite photo software or website retrieve the address for that location or display them on a map.
